High School Musical TV Series...Say What?

By Lindsay McGlamery

If you haven’t heard the latest news about Disney Channel trying to bring back High School Musical in the last few years… well, here I am telling you this. Disney Channel announced the production of a High School Musical tv series, set to premiere in 2019. I am here to give you my opinion on the news, but first, let start off with some background info.

My Background On High School Musical

In 2006, High School Musical premiered on Disney Channel. Next, in the year 2007, the sequel premiered on Disney Channel as well. The final film premiered in theaters in 2008. All three movies had great success and won several awards. I was nine when the first movie premiered on Disney Channel.  I have been a fan of this franchise ever since. The major I am studying in school currently was partly because of this franchise.  Between 2006 to 2008, I owned everything made for this franchise. My celebrity crush is Zac Efron. I supported the rest of the original cast as well.

Leading Up To The Announcement On September 6, 2018

In 2016, it was the tenth anniversary of the first film.  Disney Channel celebrated it well by showing the film and bringing back the cast to relive it. Shortly after, there were rumors that Disney Channel decided to greenlight a project for a High School Musical 4. After two years, the Disney Channel, finally, made an official announcement about this show. Next portion of this post will explain a little more about the show.

About The Show

First off, the title of this show is “High School Musical: The Musical.” Second, all-new characters (seven total), including a new drama teacher, will be featured in this show. Another thing is the show will take place at East High. During the show, the characters will be in the process of putting on a school musical version of “High School Musical.”

Disney’s plan is to only display this show on its new streaming service next year.  Oliver Goldstick is the main executive producer for this series. While Tim Ferdel signed on to write and executive produce this show.  The writers of the series plan on making it feel like a documentary style show. It has been said that each episode will feature a new version of the songs from the original film while also including new tunes in the show as well.

My Thoughts On The Show

Now that you know a little bit about the show, I want to tell you my thoughts on it. First off, I was a little taken back by it when I first saw the news. Of course, the original films of the franchise will always be number one. I honestly didn’t see a point for them to be making a spin-off show or film. But now that I have read up with what they are trying to accomplish I think it is a great idea. I think it is a smart idea because they made the idea their own in a way.

Second, I am not really sure how I feel about them reusing songs from the original film, but I also hope that this show becomes a success.  I want the show to succeed is that the new generation of kids will be able to be introduced to this franchise. I hope it will encourage them to go back and watch the films.

Finally, if it does succeed, maybe someday they can try to have some of the original cast guest stars. Having the original stars guest star would be a way to connect the new generation and the generation that grew up with this franchise.

Conclusion

I want to conclude this post by wishing the new cast and film crew good luck throughout this whole process. It will be a long process and there will probably be people who are for and against this. So good luck and welcome to the franchise.

I think it’ll be really interesting to see how this show goes. I loved the first HSM movie, and my cousin was obsessed with the whole franchise. I’m pretty sure I still have the dvds at my parent’s place…might have to dig them out and have an HSM marathon!
